Diamond League 17/18u Connie Mack Weekly Report

As the season kicks into full swing, we at the Diamond League are covering some of our teams in the Connie Mack division.  We are going to give a recap of some of the top finishes in the past week.


The Stark County Terriers played in the Bob Cene Memorial Tournament where they finished as the runners up. Their top performers were JC Philippi and Dominic Mongiardo and a 4 for 4 game with 3 doubles by Tyler Urconis in the quarterfinal game. They were also provided with great pitching performances by Andrew Gray and Zack Seifert. Andrew and Zack also had great performances last week in league play on the mound. With JC Philippi continuing to hit over .600 for the summer. 


Over the weekend the 17u Longhorns team competed in the Midwest Marlins Invitational. They competed well going 3-0 in Pool play to take one of the top seeds heading into bracket play. This is when they caught fire. The Longhorns made it all the way to the championship game, and they won the Midwest Marlins Invitational in nine innings 3-2. There were big performances from many people including Zac Common (Kent Roosevelt HS), Zac had eight total hits including a homerun, three walks, nine RBI and four stolen bases. Eden Wertz (Revere HS) was not far behind with eight hits of his own and he topped out at 10 RBI. Tim Orr (Lake HS) also had a great weekend at the plate, hitting 11 total hits including eight singles and two homeruns, he also drove in 5 RBI. Offense came from everyone on the team this weekend and the pitching backed them up led by Carson Murphy Woodridge HS). Murphey threw a complete game shutout with 14 strike outs while only giving up two walks. Sylvan Wiley (Hudson HS) also pitched a complete game only giving up one run and striking out seven. Alex Casper (Green HS) pitched well this weekend as well going five shutout innings striking out five and did not walk a batter. The 17u Longhorns will be back in tournament action on July 4-7 for the 965 Midsummer Classic.

Ohio Longhorns JD

This weekend the 18u Longhorns competed in the Ohio Yankees Invite. The team played well and made it all the way to the championship game before just falling short. Carl Pennington (Baldwin Wallace) led the way at the plate collecting three total hits, driving in four, and scoring three runs. Alec Jackson (Washington and Jefferson College) chipped in three hits of his own, along with two RBI and scored two runs. Kyle Dixon (Sinclair Community College) collected three hits over the weekend while driving in two runs and scoring two of his own. Nick Lallathin (Walsh University) did double duty at the plate and on the mound. Lallathin collected three hits, two RBI, and scored three runs while throwing four and a third innings, striking out three only giving up one earned run. Aiden Samuel (Mount Union) was the Longhorns’ work-horse on the mound throwing eight total innings getting two wins and striking out seven total batters over the weekend. Over the fourth of July weekend, the 18u Longhorns will take on the Jakob Gehring Invite.


Over the weekend the 17u Release team took on the Midwest Elite Showcase. The team swept the entire tournament on their way to a championship win. The team went 4-0 in pool play scoring 26 runs, while only giving up 12. They earned the number one overall seed in bracket play. Gavin Bruni (Alliance HS) led the way on both offense and on the mound; Bruni collected five hits, six RBI, and scored five runs, while tossing six no-hit innings striking out 11 batters. Jake Armsey (Walsh Jesuit HS) continued his scorching summer grabbing four hits, two RBI, and scoring five runs. Gannon Rose (Mayfield HS) pitched in three hits, an RBI, and scored two runs. Trey Pancake (South Range HS) scrapped around for four RBI on the weekend. Nate Kusner was great on the mound, tossing six innings, allowing one earned-run, while striking out eight batters. Jacob Gehring threw another Release complete game, striking out six and only giving up two earned runs. 17u Release will be back on the field for tournament play on July 11-14 for the PBR Limited Series.


Over the weekend the 18u Release competed in the All-American Classic. The continued the great weekend for Diamond League baseball as they made it all the way to the championship game before falling to Diamond Hit Club. Daniel Kennan (Sinclair Community College) led the way over the weekend with two hits, two runs scored and a walk. Anthony DiTomas collected a hit, two RBI, and scored two runs. Sam Melnyk (Tri-C) pitched in a hit, two runs, and an RBI over the weekend. Pitching for the 18u Release team was on fire this weekend. Joe Horoszko (Wittenberg) threw ANOTHER PERFECT GAME for Release. This is his second no-hitter of the year for Horoszko and another perfect game for the Release organization. Andrew Mulhern stayed hot tossing aa complete game with 11 strikeouts getting a win.
