Earlier this week the MLB held its First Year Player Draft.  Each season, the Diamond League has former players selected in the Draft. This year Dominic Canzone from Ohio State, Brock Begue from Tri-C, and Spencer Mraz from Miami (OH) were all selected in the draft.

Dominic Canzone was taken in the 8th-round (242nd overall) by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was a former member of the Diamond League affiliated Ohio Longhorns and Walsh Jesuit Warriors. For the 2019 season, Canzone, an outfielder, was a first team All-Big Ten player and led the conference in batting average at .374. Canzone’s 228 career hits at Ohio State ranks 14th all time and broke Nick Swishers consecutive on-base streak this season with 59 straight games.

Brock Begue was taken in the 11th-round (343rd overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers. He was a former member of the Diamond League affiliated Stark County Terriers and Marlington High School. Begue went 10-1 with a 2.07 ERA last season as a sophomore for Tri-C (njcaa.org). The LHP suffered strokes as a child and it is at a point where he cannot feel the baseball in his right arm and drags his right foot after tearing his ACL in 2017 (cantonrep.com). If Begue choses to sign, he will continue to defy the odds set against him.

Spencer Mraz was selected in the 33rd-round (985th overall) by the Texas Rangers. Mraz went to Berea-Midpark High School while also being a member of the Diamond League affiliated Lake Erie Warhawks. Mraz, a RHP, finished the 2019 season with a 5-6 record and an ERA of 4.03. He also struck out 72 hitters in 76 innings. During his three-year career at Miami (OH), Mraz accumulated a 3.92 ERA in just under 163 total innings.

The Diamond League has had multiple players drafted in each draft in past nine out of the last 10 drafts. Each player will need to sign with the team that drafted them to begin their professional careers this summer.  Hopefully these players will join Derek Dietrich, Clint Nagoette, Mitch Longo, and the many others draftees from the Diamond League.
