LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- St. Edward named former Miami University and St. Ignatius standout pitcher Matt Rosinski its head baseball coach this week.

Rosinski, who earned accolades as a closer for the Redhawks before graduating in 2012, recently served as the junior varsity coach and pitching co-ordinator for St. Ignatius.

He said pulling on the jersey of rival St. Edward for the first time is going to feel "different," however, he is excited for the opportunity.

"I cant wait to bring my passion and energy to the baseball program at St. Edward and lead great student-athletes," Rosinski said

Rosinski replaces Joe Kasl, who stepped down after guiding the Eagles to a regional semifinal appearance and a 20-10 record in 2014.

Rosinski, who runs the Release Baseball Program in the summer, is an accountant in private practice. He said the Eagles return a core of talented senior leaders that will help him build the program in 2016.

"We'll have unbelievable senior leadership with pitcher Jaret Edwards (George Washington commit) as well as infielders Joe Weisenseel and Evan Kayser (Truman State)," Rosinski said. "Pitching is going to be our backbone."

A former team captain at Miami, Rosinski guided the St. Ignatius junior varsity to a 23-4 record in 2015. His Release Baseball Program, team compiled a 35-5-1 record in 2015 summer league play.

Rosinski holds the record for career appearances as a pitcher at Miami and is among the school's all-time saves leaders. He received the Redhawk Award for the top student-athlete and leadership, and was also the recipient of the Mid-American Conference’s Commissioner’s Award in addition to being named Academic All-MAC first team.

St. Edward Athletic Director Paul Michalko said Rosinski brings energy to a baseball program that won state titles in 2010, 2008 and 1998.

“Not only has he proven he can build a competitive program, but he will be an excellent role model for our students, which is something that is critical for us in all of our sports,” Michalko said.

Rosinski credited St. Ignatius baseball coach Brad Ganor and Wildcats returning basketball coach Brian Becker (both of whom coached Rosinski in high school) for helping him get the St. Edward job.

"I've learned a lot from Brad and Brian," Rosinski said. "It says a lot about their character that they reached out to help."
